Burning Permit Information

District of Hope – Important Information Before You Burn

Open burning within the District of Hope is regulated to protect public safety, property, and air quality. Please review all information on this page before applying for or conducting a burn.

Summary of Burning Permit Process

Burning permits cost $200 and are valid for 72 hours. The process is as follows:

  • Obtain a burn registration number from the Province of British Columbia.
  • Submit a burn application to the District of Hope and pay the $200 fee upon approval.
  • Check the Venting Index and ensure it is rated “Good” before burning.
  • Notify the Fire Department before ignition.
  • Conduct your burn safely and attend the fire at all times.

All open burning activities must comply with the District of Hope Fire Services By-law. Failure to comply may result in enforcement action or fines.

Before You Conduct Your Burn

  • Will this fire be located on private property?
  • Will the fire be monitored at all times until fully extinguished?
  • Will the fire be at least 15 metres from any structure?
  • Will the fire be at least 4 metres from standing trees, logs, or woody debris?
If you answered no to any of these questions, contact the Fire Department to discuss options before proceeding.

  • Notify Fire Department before ignition
  • Ensure fire is attended at all times
  • Have water or suppression tools on hand
  • Ensure burn area is clear of hazards
