The Planning and Building Section of the Community Development Department is responsible for land use planning and review and approval of applications, building inspection, and environmental initiatives.
The Department handles re-zonings, development permits, development variance permits, Official Community Plan amendments, subdivisions and Agricultural Land Reserve applications, and second dwelling applications. Its mandate is to provide quality "one-stop" service to customers, and to work actively with customers to find solutions and solve problems. The principles of customer service, a proactive approach to application review, sound community planning and well constructed infrastructure guide the work of the group.
This Department tackles emerging planning issues, identifying and exploring trends and issues, developing forecasts, and proposing and assessing policy responses. It is also responsible for the Official Community Plan which is the blueprint for land development in the future.
This Department is responsible for all forms of development activity in the District, including regulating and controlling building, while at the same time ensuring that health and safety regulations are maintained. It is the responsibility of this Department to provide information and assistance to others with regard to construction, technical information, and uniform standards and zoning as it relates to buildings.
This Department is also responsible for the issuance of building permits, demolition permits, moving of buildings and mobile homes, swimming pools, stoves, fireplaces, sprinkler systems, sign permits and business licences.
